San Cristobal Island
San Cristóbal is
one of the oldest islands of the archipelago and
it maintains varied ecosystems with great biological
richness.
The island is composed of diverse landscapes and vegetation
zones, making it possible to observe and admire a number
of species, many of them unique in the world. The variation
in climate and vegetation allows visitors to easily
visit the most arid and barren zones as well as the
most humid and fertile.
San Cristóbal harbors an immense biodiversity.
It is not unusual to find Sea Turtles, Sea Lions, and
Lobsters a few meters from the coast, Giant Tortoises,
Marine Iguanas and Lava Lizards on land, and around
60 species of birds, including Blue-footed Boobies,
Frigates, Galápagos Pintails, Brown Pelicans,
Darwin's Finches, and Tropicbirds. It is also possible
to find endemic species such as the Chatham Mockingbird
(Nesomimus melanotis), the San Cristóbal Leaf-toed
Gecko (Phyllodactylus leei), the Giant Tortoise (Geochelone
chathamensis), and the San Cristóbal Lava Lizard
(Microlophus bivattatus).
Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the provincial capital of
the archipelago, has services and comforts for its
visitors as well as its native population. Located
on a collapsed volcano and by the sea, Puerto Baquerizo
Moreno has a great number of attractions and tourist
areas unique in the world.
The sea breeze, the call of
the birds, and the roar of the sea lions will accompany
you in your unforgettable visit to San Cristóbal.
